Verdict
Copper Moon’s Sumatra Blend undersells its own name: the brand’s materials describe sourcing beans from 17 countries across 5 continents, not a single Indonesian origin, so treat “Sumatra” here as a flavor profile rather than a provenance claim. Our tasting found it sour, harsh, and surprisingly thin on aroma even fresh out of a new bag — a complaint echoed by a real minority of other buyers who independently report weak aroma and inconsistent, occasionally burnt roasting from batch to batch. Reception is genuinely split, though: most reviewers across retailers call it smooth and non-bitter, so results seem to vary more than we’d like at this price. We also can’t back the “premium specialty grade” language on the package — that’s the brand’s own unverified marketing, not an independent grade — and at roughly $11/lb with inconsistent results, we’d look elsewhere first.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Most buyers across retailers report a smooth, non-bitter cup
- Bold, earthy/smoky profile that dark-roast fans tend to like
- Priced below many name-brand competitors for the volume
- Widely available in bulk sizes at major retailers
Cons
- Our own tasting found it sour, harsh, and thin on aroma
- A real minority of buyers independently report weak aroma and inconsistent, occasionally burnt roasting
- “Sumatra” implies single-origin, but sourcing spans 17 countries and 5 continents per the brand
- “Premium specialty grade” is brand marketing language, not a verified or certified grade
About the Brand
Copper Moon Coffee got its start in the late 1960s as a house-brand roaster tied to Marsh Supermarkets in Indiana. Brothers Brad and Cary Gutwein bought the company in 2007 and have run it independently ever since — it’s not part of a larger corporate portfolio. The Lafayette, Indiana roastery markets its beans as non-GMO, kosher, and “small-batch roasted,” positioned as a value alternative to bigger national brands.
