Verdict
The Original is a middle-of-the-road everyday whole bean coffee — mellow, low-acid, and easy to drink black or with milk, but unremarkable next to fresher, better-sourced options at a similar price. A number of long-time drinkers report the aroma and consistency have softened over the past decade, and it doesn’t stand out on flavor the way our higher-rated picks do. At grocery-store prices, it’s a passable default when you just want something in the cabinet — just don’t expect it to be a highlight of your morning.

About the Brand
Eight O’Clock Coffee dates back to 1859 as a store brand of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A&P). After A&P’s decline it was sold to private equity in 2003, then acquired in 2006 for $220 million by Tata Coffee — now part of India’s publicly traded Tata Consumer Products. It’s one of several coffee brands in Tata’s portfolio, roasted in Landover, Maryland out of its Montvale, New Jersey headquarters.
